The natural gas boom gripping parts of the U.S. has a nasty byproduct: wastewater so salty, and so polluted with metals like barium and strontium, that most states require drillers to get rid of the stuff by injecting it down shafts thousands of feet deep.

Not in Pennsylvania, one of the states at the center of the gas rush. There, the liquid that gushes from gas wells is only partially treated for substances that could be environmentally harmful, then dumped into rivers and streams from which communities get their drinking water. Read the article

Fall for a Tree!

Fall is a great time to plant trees! As the weather turns cooler in September and October, Baltimore County homeowners can 'Fall for a Tree' and help increase the tree canopy in our region AND get $10 for every tree they plant in their yards through the Growing Home Campaign.

NWS: "A good likelihood" of more than 10 inches

The updated Winter Storm Watch issued at noon today by the National Weather Service has effectively doubled the official estimates for snowfall in Baltimore with the approaching storm.The new Watch says there is a "potential" for 8 or more inches of snow, and "a good likelihood of snow in excess of 10 inches." Previously, the Watch called for 5 inches or more.

The Watch is in effect from mid- to late-afternoon Tuesday until Wednesday evening.The update brings the weather service more closely in line with other forecasters in the area, who have been talking about a 10 or 12-inch storm, or as much as 20 inches, for a couple of days.

Frog populations have been declining worldwide at unprecedented rates, and nearly one-third of the world’s 6,317 amphibian species are threatened with extinction. At least 100 species have completely disappeared since 1980, and this is NOT normal: amphibians naturally go extinct at a rate of only about one species every 250 years!!!

Frog populations are faced with an onslaught of environmental problems: pollution, infectious diseases, habitat loss, invasive species, climate change, and over-harvesting for the pet and food trades. Unless these problems are remedied, amphibian species will continue to disappear, resulting in irreversible consequences to the planet’s ecosystems.

Darkness signals the time when ghosties and goblins and things that go bump in the night emerge from their crypts and caves and murky woods to wreak murder and mayhem ... oh wait, that's just the bigger kids terrorizing their little brothers and sisters into giving up their candy hauls.

It's the one night of the year when running around the neighborhood with a roll of toilet paper in your hand doesn't get you branded as a lunatic, and when a really overripe tomato is considered perfect. It's a night for costumes and candy, kids and capers, bonfires and bobbing for apples, hayrides and haunted houses.

But did you know that Halloween had its beginnings in an ancient, pre-Christian Celtic festival of the dead? Yep. The festival observed at this time was called Samhain (pronounced Sah-ween). It was the biggest and most significant holiday of the Celtic year. The Celts believed that at the time of Samhain, more so than any other time of the year, the ghosts of the dead were able to mingle with the living, because at Samhain the souls of those who had died during the year traveled into the otherworld. People gathered to sacrifice animals, fruits, and vegetables. They also lit bonfires in honor of the dead, to aid them on their journey, and to keep them away from the living. On that day all manner of beings were abroad: ghosts, fairies, and demons--all part of the dark and dread.

Hello from Ocean City! Am at the Ocean City Library as we speak. So far things have been pretty awesome. Great weather ... lots of sunshine, light breezes, good food ... and a comfy bed to sleep in. Havent' been on the beach yet, but there are still four days left so I'm sure I'll get in plenty of sand time.

Only fly in the ointment, so to speak, was at lunch yesterday at Marina Deck on Dorchester Street in Old O.C. when I leaned over in my chair to pick up my napkin, the chair broke, and I ended up being the floor show. Few bruises on my left leg, but nothing major. Sure, they hurt when you touch 'em, so ... I don't touch 'em! ;-)

Got to go for now ... shopping awaits!

Been trying to embed a Google calendar in my blog ... but can't seem to get the specific calendar I want to embed to show up. It looks fine on the Google screen, but doesn't transfer well. Getting frustrated, which usually means it's time to leave it alone and walk away ... before I begin to scream and throw things and punch holes in the wall. Well, okay, so I won't really do any of those things ... except maybe scream. But then again, with the kind of day I've had ... I may be screaming for an entirely different reason than the calendar.

So what, exactly, is this time of year all about?

Putting aside the commercial aspect of the season, with the mad rush for toys and games and who knows what-all that's suddenly become "the thing" to have. And forgetting for a moment about the huge lists of things still left to be done ... the world won't come to an end if you don't buy eggnog ... really! ... what is this time of year all about?

For Christians, the feast of Christmas is a joyous religious event, celebrating the birth of Jesus. The holiday's connection to Christ is obvious through its Old English root of "Cristes maesse" or Christ's Mass. It is the time to renew one's faith, give generously and consider the past. Jesus is considered to be the Light of the World, the Son of God, the Savior.

And for others, the Yule (Winter Solstice, Midwinter) holiday is rooted deeply in the cycle of the year. It is the Winter Solstice that is being celebrated, the longest night and shortest day. The birth of the new Sun King. On this darkest of nights, the Goddess becomes the Great Mother and once again gives birth. And on the longest night of the winter, 'the dark night of our souls', there springs the new spark of hope, the Sacred Fire, the Light of the World. And while Yule actually begins a few days before the Christian holiday, followers observe many of the traditional customs of the season: decorated trees, carolling, presents, Yule logs, and mistletoe.

But Christmas is also a secular celebration of family--one that many non-practicing Christians and people of other religions are comfortable accepting as their own. The secular nature of Christmas was officially acknowledged in 1870 when the United States Congress made it a federal holiday.

Even nature itself joins in a kind of celebration. Autumn has given way to Winter. Trees are barren of leaves, skies are often gray, snows blanket the ground, and animals go into hiding. The winter season symbolizes death, yet we know this "death" is a part of the cycle of life and will soon give way to Spring ... and rebirth!

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells ...

OMG! Can you believe it's, like, DECEMBER already?!?!?! With this warm wacky weather recently, it sure doesn't feel like it! But ... there are only 26 days 'til Christmas!

Usually I've gotten most, if not all, of my shopping done by Thanksgiving, and can relax to enjoy the season as it unfolds ... but between Christmas decorations going up in stores the day after Halloween, carols being played on the radio in mid-November, it's sure hard to remember what this season is truly all about.

While we're all out rushing mindlessly from store to store and place to place, let's try and remember that the season isn't about the latest gadgets and gizmos, or the hottest new shoes, or that designer handbag. It's about giving as well as receiving, for reaching out to those less fortunate, for compassion and tolerance, for gathering together of family and friends.

For those of you who don't already know, I'm a supporter of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and its efforts to save the Bay. That's right, one of those darn tree-huggers. Or, in this case, a blue crab and oyster hugger. ;)

I grew up on the bay, fishing and crabbing with my grandfather, and it hurts me to see the condition the Bay is in. If we don't try to stop and reverse the damage now, there will be nothing left to share with our own grandchildren.

... or is it?

Seems to me that there were an awful lot of things I had no clue about when I started this whole thing way back when. And yes, there are still some things I have no clue about even now! But on the whole, this was a great learning experience because participation forced me to look at new technologies and new ways of doing things that I might not otherwise have seen.

LibraryThing, of course, scored high on my list of new and exciting things, and I can see myself continuing to use it. In fact, I've already shown it to several of my bibliophile friends and gotten them hooked on it as well.

And the online productivity tools is something I will definitely be looking into using in the future! I'm on a couple of committees that will benefit from using something like Google Docs because we are all from different library systems, and more than one person will be able to edit the same document since it resides on the internet and not a hard drive in a fixed location.

It was hard to keep up with this program at times because other tasks and/or commitments would pop up that took precedence. It was also hard to remember to work on my blog because it wasn't kept in the forefront of my mind ... I tended to forget about it as daily routines took over my time and thoughts, and only remembered about it when someone in the office would mention their blog or something they'd seen during a particular exercize.

Thanks for the experience!

Week 9 - YouTube, Podcasts & OverDrive

If you knew YouTube like I knew YouTube ... you'd scratch your head and wonder "what were those people thinking?!?!?!?!?!"

Some of the stuff I saw was cool ... especially the retro clips I haven't seen for years ... things that remind me of something from the past. But other stuff ... it's like somebody without a life had a movie camera and just turned it on and pointed it at something, then put the result on YouTube. Either that, or I am totally clueless!

Now Podcasts are a whole different animal. I think they're great, and would love to see BCPL use them on the website ... perhaps an original storytime or other children's program ... and we should definitely create podcasts of stuff for teens!

As for downloadable audiobooks from OverDrive and NetLibrary ... well, I probably have a slight advantage since I'm the troubleshooter for OverDrive problems, and also handled trouble calls from customers when we still subscribed to NetLibrary.

There is definitely a large audience for these downloadable materials, and I believe it becomes more popular every day. As older customers become more exposed to the technology required to listen to audiobooks, they are more comfortable with it. And listening to an audiobook enables them to remain active while pursuing a favored pasttime, rather than limiting them to sitting in a chair to read a book. And most of our younger customers are already comfortable with technology because of their almost contstant exposure to computers, MP3 players, iPods, GameBoy, Wii, X-Box, PS3, OnDemand movies, etc.

If we want to keep our customers, we need to keep up with them!

Week 8 - online productivity & Web 2.0 Awards

Cool beans! I was playing around with Google Docs and can link to my email from the docs page, and to my docs from my gmail account ... created a mini presentation using an online PowerPoint-like program.

And apparently Google Docs won one of the highest Web 2.0 awards. I can see why! Your stuff can be accessed from any computer on the internet instead of being on your local hard drive or on a CD you have to carry around with you. Plus, anyone can edit the document ... even leave a note for a colleague on the document ... no more trying to remember where you stored it on the WAN or whether the folder it's stored in is accessible to everyone who needs the document.

Week 7 - all about wikis

Wow! I went to Google and typed in wiki and library and got gazillions of hits back! There are wikis for librarians, wikis about librarians, library wikis, business wikis, training wikis, instrutctional wikis, personal interest wikis ... there are wikis up the wazoo!

According to that most famous of wikis, Wikipedia, the definition of a wiki is: "a web application that allows users to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content. Wiki also refers to the collaborative software used to create such a website (see Wiki software). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WIKI"

Finally figured out how to login to the Learning 2.0 sandbox wiki to add an entry. Took my brain forever to find the password. :(

Not overly impressed with Technorati ... too busy for me. Visual overload. Links to blogs from all over the place, not necessarily on same subject. Thought tags were supposed to help with that?

When attempting to find a definition for Web 2.0 that I actually understood, I found the usual Wikipedia entry, but also came across an article by Tim O'Reilly that actually made sense to me.

I read the Library 2.0 article http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6365200.html and realized that while BCPL is already working toward this goal, there is a LOT more we could be doing to better serve our customers. System and departmental workplans are all well and good but often ideas take a long time to research, discuss, decide, design, and implement. And there have been a number of great ideas that, by the time the implementation phase was reached, the needs of our customers had changed and moved beyond what we were trying to provide.

Technology is growing at such a rapid rate than it's hard for libraries to keep up and to serve the customer "where he's at" before the customer has moved on to a totally different place. But I believe BCPL is headed in the right direction ... we just need to find a way to move faster so we can reach the customers "where they are" before they're gone.

Week 5 1/2 and Week 6

Finished up the Week 5 assignment by checking out an online logo generator called Cool Text, and an image generator site called (of all things) Image Generator. Tried creating my own Maryland license plate, but had a hard time getting the words centered. You can adjust the text size and alignment, but I guess I'm spoiled by PhotoShop where I can drag text around the screen and place it exactly where I want it without worrying about how many pixels it is from the edge.

On to del.icio.us -- as I understand it, this is a place where I can store my favorites (bookmarks) and access them from ANY browser, not just the one on the computer where I stored it under "Favorites / Add to Favorites". That sounds positive. There have definitely been times when I was home and wishing I could remember the URL to a site I'd found while at work. And I really like the feature that lets you share your bookmarks or keep them private!

My, oh, my what a wonderful day! The weather certainly turned nice the past couple of days, and sleeping with the windows open at night it the ultimate!

Was adding more books to my LibraryThing when I came across this "chiclet" you could add to your blog that would link folks directly to your library on LibraryThing if they clicked on it.

Nothing indicates that it's a link ... not outlined in blue, no underline, etc ... just this little red box with the word THINGAMABRARIAN in it.

Oops! Missed one of the steps in Week 3, so I backtracked. Went to MySpace and created a page, just to see what all the hoopla was about. Don't know about you, but I'm really not sure what the big deal is ... was ... whatever. Is MySpace, like, so last year?

Half of the MySpace pages didn't make any sense to me ... they were totally whacked out. And there is apparently a new foreign language floating around out there, or maybe I am just too old to "get it" any more. (I'm afraid to quote any of the weird things I read because I don't know if I'll be saying something totally gross and nasty or not!)

Creating my Meez was much more fun!

Haven't been doing much on the Maryland 23 Things front lately. Either the novelty is wearing off, or I've actually been busy working!

Let's see ... been editing StaffNet, creating programming features for the public website, deciding where to put links to foreign language versions of the library card application, feeding and entertaining Phish, editing Infobank, looking through the latest L.L. Bean catalog, creating new Research Databases A to Z pages for the public website, writing memos, working with the other members of the Staff Day Committee to plan the "big day", and monitoring AskUsNow!.

Next week I'm boycotting work and going to Tilghman Island. My folks gave me a lighthouse tour for my birthday. It's a three-hour tour by boat of five lighthouses on the Chesapeake Bay. Cool, huh?

Yeah, I remember what happened to those other folks who took a three-hour tour, but I doubt a movie star or the Professor and MaryAnn are going to be aboard this trip. :)

Week 5: Rolling, rolling, rollyo ...

I have no idea what week I'm supposed to be on ... but I've been playing around with the stuff that's on the Maryland 23 Things list for week 5 and have created my own searchrolls on Rollyo. Took a while to get the hang of it and I ended up with two of everything, but I finally figured it out. (hey, c'mon, gimme a break ... it's Monday for pete's sake!)

Adding a link to the Rollyo search box was just a matter of copying and pasting code, so there's a new element on my page now. This stuff we're learning is pretty cool ... just wonder how often we'll get a chance to share our newfound knowledge with the public.

I hope there are plans for ways we can keep it going, even after the 13 weeks are over!

Week 5: Such a thing, this LibraryThing ...

I don't know about anyone else, but participating in this Maryland 23 Things has introduced me to some really fun new websites and other cool stuff ... but it's also created a monster! I find it getting harder and harder to tear myself away from the neato groovy play stuff and concentrate on the work stuff I have to do!

My latest neato groovy cool "discovery" is LibraryThing (NOT Library Elf, which I was mistakenly trying to use ... and rather unsuccessfully I might add!) and once I learned how LibraryThing worked (thanks, Jim!) I started adding books and manipulating my library and changing book covers and adding tags and I was ready to stop ... but then I found code to add random book titles from my LibraryThing library to my blog and I just had to see if I could get it to work ... and the next thing I knew, over an hour had passed!!

Yikes!!! Guess I shouldn't have admitted that since my boss is one of the people reading all these blog posts! :)

Hmmm. Okay. See, I noticed I'd skipped one of the things we were supposed to look at during this whole Maryland 23 Things thing, so I went back to take a look at some Flickr mashups and now my brain is nothing but mush!

I Googled flickr mashups and the first hit was "Ten Best Flickr Mashups" at webmomkey.com so I clicked on it. Their definition of mashup left me more confused than I was before I read it!

She and her parents came up from GA to visit last weekend. She's getting so big and she'll be walking in no time.

Week 3: Do you Flickr?

We've started this project called "Maryland 23 Things" at work, and one of the things we have to do is explore new stuff on the web. We're learning about Web 2.0 (whatever that is), and one of things we're supposed to do is explore Flickr ... and discover mash-ups and stuff.

Anyway, I uploaded photos (see 'em at http://www.flickr.com/photos/mouser61256/) and now (of course!) I am totally hooked!

How am I supposed to get any WORK done when there are all these cool things to PLAY with out there?!?!

From a cartoon in the late 90's called "Biker Mice from Mars" about these muscle-bound mutant mice who crash-landed on Earth and fought nasty bad guys to save the planet from annihilation. There have been some remakes, but ain't nothin' as cool as the original.

Still playing ... pretty cool, being able to add a photo to your post. Looks like you can share a vacation photo this way ... but you know I had to use this particular photo for two reasons. One, because it has to do with cheese. And two, because it will gross out "cuterthanu" ;)
